SHARING DRIVING LICENCE INFORMATION

From June 2015, the driving licence counterpart no longer has any legal status. In order for driving instructors, hire car companies, employers, etc to check driving entitlements they will need to access the online "Share Driving Licence" service and to do this they require a "Check Code" from the licence holder, which can only be used once and is only valid for 21 days together with the last 8 digits of the driving licence number.

To generate the "Check Code" please click here and provide the code together with the last 8 digits of your driving licence number to your driving instructor immediately.

SWAPPY

From 12th May 2026, only driving test candidates can book and manage, including change and swap, driving tests by way of a three way phone call with DVSA involving both driving test candidates, who must be available at the same time. It will be illegal for third parties (e,g, driving instructors, websites, apps, etc.) to do so. There is no need to share personal details (e.g. name, address, email address, telephone number, driving licence number) with the other test candidate and only the two test Booking Reference Numbers are needed to initiate the swap with DVSA. DVSA require that both driving test candidates must have at least one of their 2 allowed changes available, weekday tests can only be swapped with weekday tests and from 9th June 2026 tests can only be swapped at the same Driving Test Centre (DTC) or to one of the three nearby DTCs (For Chippenham tests these are either Trowbridge, Bristol Kingswood or Swindon and for Trowbridge tests either Chippenham, Bristol Kingswood or Salisbury). Driving instructors may assist by matching each other's pupils to facilitate test swaps but, If matches involve Automatically Shamrock Driving School, both involved individual pupils will be responsible for ensuring they comply with DVSA requirements above together with agreeing between each other the date, time for and which of them will make the initial call to DVSA  along with making themselves available to make and take the DVSA phone call.

Swappy is a portal for learner drivers to find a swap partner. According to the Swappy website, it does not conduct the swap and, therefore, allegedly fully complies with DVSA rule changes, since only the two learners who agree to swap conduct the swap themselves with the DVSA. Swappy state that you start by listing your test (i.e. date, time, test centre) on their site with only your username being shown publicly, find a match by browsing other learners' listings by date, centre or test type and complete the swap by one of the learners calling DVSA with both booking reference numbers, when DVSA phones the other learner separately to confirm. Swappy's Premium users can opt in to Swappy bridging the call "as a nice-to-have backup".

When it comes to arranging the call to DVSA, be aware that they are open 8am-6pm Monday to Friday. DVSA will normally ask for at least two, probably all, out of your provisional driving licence number, both driving test booking reference numbers (to also identify the other candidate to contact) and your theory test pass certificate number. They will often also request your full name (as it appears on the licence, full postal address, current test date, time and centre for both tests and your contact phone number for confirmation.  Both candidates need to consent so, after the first call, DVSA will phone the other candidate separately on the number recorded against their booking on the DVSA system. It’s vital both candidates have the correct phone number recorded on their DVSA bookings. Once they have verified both sets of details, the DVSA can manually swap the two appointments in their system. Please be aware that the swap counts as one of both candidate’s 2 allowed changes.

Swappy offers a free trial that allows test candidates to list their test and browse current swaps. In order to send a proposal and complete a swap, it is necessary to make a first payment and begin a subscription, with Premium starting at £4.99 per month and adds automatic 3-way DVSA calling, browsing up to 5 centres and email alerts for new listings.
